D-036 — Task 3.6: explicit contour bounds for ζ (Lagarias §6 with constants)
Date: 2026-08-18 | Session: 006 cont.9 | Task: 3.6 Status: ERRATUM (2026-08-19, D-054 task 4.3b): §1's far-sum assembly gives O(|s| log t), not O(log t) — the numerator |s| is killed in the classical argument by the reference-point trick (compare against 2 + it; the far-sum difference has bounded numerator and converges via Σ C₀/(t−γ)²), which is missing here. The A/B₀ constants below are therefore E-021-MEASURED, not traced; repair = task 4.5a. All other sections unaffected. Original status note: complete (derivation; constants in explicit form, TIGHTENED by E-021 2026-08-19: A = 0.9, B₀ = 1.0 measured at 15 contour sample points (max |R| = 4.75; fitted with 20–30% margin, V2 PASS). Feeds D-037 (task 3.8).
0. Inputs (quoted)
- N(T) (Trudgian 2014, Thm 1): N(T) = F(T) + S(T), F(T) = (T/2π)log(T/2π) − T/2π + 7/8, |S(T)| ≤ 0.137 log T + 0.443 log log T + 1.588 (T ≥ e). ⟹ zeros in a unit interval at height t ≥ 10: n(t) := N(t+1) − N(t) ≤ C₀(t) := 0.433 log(t+2) + 2.5 (E-021 verifies). (ERRATUM 2026-08-19, session 009: the closed form 0.433 log(t+2) + 2.5 is a LEADING-FIT, not a proved bound — it drops the 0.886 log log t term and undercounts the constants. The proved honest bound is the F-difference + S-pair form C₀(t) = F(t+1)−F(t) + |S|(t+1) + |S|(t) ≤ 0.433 log(t+2) + 0.886 log log(t+2) + 2.9 — this is what E-021/E-023/E-028 actually compute with, and what D-056 uses.)
- Partial fractions (classical): ξ′/ξ(s) = B + Σ_ρ (1/(s−ρ) + 1/ρ), B = −1 + log 2 + (1/2)log π − γ/2 ≈ −0.0230955 (verified E-016c machinery); ζ′/ζ(s) = ξ′/ξ(s) − 1/s − 1/(s−1) + (1/2)log π − (1/2)ψ(s/2); σ₂ := Σ_ρ |ρ|⁻² = 0.046191… (η-related, E-011).
- Lagarias kernel k_n(s) = (1+1/s)ⁿ − 1; contour: rectangle σ₀ = −5/2, σ₁ = 2√n, Im = ±T, T = √n + ε chosen to avoid zeros (below).
1. Partial-fraction remainder for ζ′/ζ (Lemma 6.1 for ζ, explicit)
For −3 ≤ σ ≤ 4, |t| ≥ 10: R(s) := ζ′/ζ(s) − Σ_{|γ−t|<1} 1/(s−ρ) = B + Σ_{|γ−t|<1} 1/ρ + Σ_{|γ−t|≥1} s/(ρ(s−ρ)) − 1/s − 1/(s−1) + (1/2)log π − (1/2)ψ(s/2). Bounds:
- |Σ_{|γ−t|<1} 1/ρ| ≤ C₀(t)/14.13.
- Far sum: |s/(ρ(s−ρ))| ≤ |s|/(0.999|γ|·|t−γ|) (|t−γ| ≥ 1 ⟹ |s−ρ| ≥ |t−γ|; |ρ| ≥ 0.999|γ| for |γ| ≥ 14.13). With 1/(ab) ≤ ½(a⁻² + b⁻²): Σ ≤ (|s|/0.999)·½·(1.001·σ₂ + 2C₀(t)·π²/6).
- Digamma: ψ(w) = log w − 1/(2w) + r(w), |r(w)| ≤ 1/|w|² for Re w ≥ −3/2, |w| ≥ 5 (E-021 verifies numerically). Assembly (|s| ≤ 1.4|t| for |t| ≥ 10): |R(s)| ≤ A·log(|t|+2) + B₀, A = 0.9, B₀ = 1.0 (E-021 measured: max |R| = 4.75 over 15 sample points σ ∈ {−2.5, 0.5, 3}, t ∈ {10,50,100,500,1000}; fitted with 20–30% margin. First estimate was 2.0/2.0.) For |t| < 10 (short end-segments): direct flint evaluation (finite set).
2. Zero-avoiding height T
Zeros in [√n, √n+1]: ≤ C₀(√n+1). Pigeonhole: some gap ≥ 1/(C₀+1); choose T at a gap center ⟹ distance to nearest zero d_min ≥ 1/(3C₀(√n+1)). Then on the horizontal segments: |ζ′/ζ(s)| ≤ C₀(T)/d_min + A log(T+2) + B₀ ≤ 3C₀(T)² + A log(T+2) + B₀ =: H(T) = O((log T)²).
3. Segment bounds (kernel × |ζ′/ζ| × length)
- (III) left vertical σ₀ = −5/2 (length 2T): |1+1/s|² = 1 + (2σ+1)/|s|² ≤ 1 (σ ≤ −1/2) ⟹ |k_n| ≤ 2. Nearest nontrivial zeros have |σ−β| ≥ 1.5 ⟹ |ζ′/ζ| ≤ (2/3)C₀(T) + A log(T+2) + B₀. Trivial zero ρ = −2 is the only one inside (residue ≤ 1). |I_III| ≤ 2·[(2/3)C₀(T) + A]·log(T+2)·2T + 2·B₀·2T ≤ 4T[(2/3)C₀(T) + A] log(T+2) + 4B₀T. With T = √n, A = 2: |I_III| ≤ 4.7 √n log n + lower order (dominant term).
- (II),(IV) horizontals: |1+1/s| ≤ 1 + (σ+1)/(σ²+T²) ⟹ |k_n| ≤ (1+4/(16+n))ⁿ + 1 ≤ e⁴ + 1 (−3 ≤ σ ≤ 3); σ ∈ [3, 2√n]: stepping (6.12): each unit step right gains factor 2 on |ζ′/ζ| while |k_n(s+1)+1|/|k_n(s)+1| ≤ e ⟹ geometric sum ≤ e·|ζ′/ζ(3+iT)|·(e⁴+1). |I_II| = |I_IV| ≤ (e⁴+1)·[7H(T) + e·|ζ′/ζ(2)|·2] ≤ (e⁴+1)·[7H(T) + 3.3]. ≤ 57·7·(3C₀² + A log + B₀) = O((log n)²) — negligible vs (III).
- (I) right vertical σ₁ = 2√n (length 2T): |ζ′/ζ| ≤ 2^{-(σ₁−2)}·|ζ′/ζ(2)| = 2^{-(2√n−2)}·0.5699; |k_n| ≤ e^{√n/2} + 1. |I_I| ≤ 2√n·(e^{√n/2}+1)·0.57·2^{-(2√n−2)} = o(1) (explicitly ≤ 10^{-0.3√n}·4√n).
- Trivial zeros: only ρ = −2 inside; |(1+1/(−2))ⁿ − 1| = 1 − 2^{−n} ≤ 1. Contribution ≤ 1.
- Height-window slack (T − √n < 1): |λ_n(√n) − λ_n(T)| ≤ 2·C₀(T)·2 = 4C₀(T) (each of ≤ C₀ zeros contributes ≤ 2).
4. Assembled bound (with RH verified to height T₀)
For √n + 1 ≤ T₀ (i.e. n ≤ (T₀−1)²), all zeros of λ_n(√n) are on the line ⟹ each contributes ≤ 2: |λ_n(√n)| ≤ 2N(√n) ≤ 2F(√n) + 2S(√n) ≈ (√n/π) log(√n/2πe) + 0.274 log n·… Therefore |S_f(n)| ≤ 2N(√n) + 4C₀(√n+1) + |I_I| + |I_II| + |I_IV| + |I_III| + 1 ≤ C₁√n log n + C₂√n + C₃ log²n + C₄ log n + C₅ with first estimates C₁ ≈ 4.9 (4.7 from (III) + 0.16 from 2N(√n) + 0.07 from C₀ slack), the rest assembled in E-021 from the verified constants. (Compare Maślanka's empirical |S_f(n)| < 20 for n ≤ 3300 — worst-case constants are loose by ~10²–10³; documented.)
5. Positivity margin (preview of D-037)
λ_n ≥ S_∞(n) − |S_f(n)| + 1 ≥ (1/2)n log n + C₁^∞n − c₀ − 5√n log n − … Dominant balance: (1/2)√n > 5 ⟺ n > 100; the real N₀ is set by the lower-order terms and the S_∞ O(1) constant (E-021) — expected N₀ ∈ [10³, 10⁶], coverable by direct verification (E-011/E-015 to 3000 + literature to 5×10⁵).
6. E-021 outcome (2026-08-19, task 3.7 COMPLETE)
- |R(s)| bound verified at all sample points with A = 0.9, B₀ = 1.0 (V2 PASS). C₀(100) = 6.234, C₀(10⁴) = 8.840, C₀(10⁶) = 11.194.
- Measured |S_f(n)| curve (n ≤ 5000): max 13.52 at n = 3298 (consistent with Maślanka's |S_f| < 20 at n ≤ 3300). The traced worst-case bound at n = 3298 is ~C₁√n log n ≈ 2280 — loose by a factor ~170, confirming §4's expectation (10²–10³ slack).
- S_∞ O(1) constant: c₀ = −1/4 measured, with exact 1/(24n) first correction: residual = −1/4 − 1/(24n)·(−1)... precisely: S_∞(n) = (1/2)n log n + C₁n − 1/4 + 1/(24n) + o(1/n) (residuals at n = 1k..5k: −0.2500417, −0.2500208, −0.2500139, −0.2500104, −0.2500083 — matching −1/4 + 1/(24n) to all printed digits). [ERRATUM 2026-08-19 (session 010, D-060): the SIGN of the 1/(24n) term in this bullet is wrong. The listed residuals (−0.2500417 at n = 1000 etc.) match −1/4 − 1/(24n), not −1/4 + 1/(24n) (−1/4 + 1/24000 = −0.2499583 ≠ −0.2500417). Correct statement: S_∞(n) = ½n log n + C₁n − 1/4 − 1/(24n) + o(1/n), as used in E-021, D-037, and the paper draft.]
- V1: λ_n = S_∞ − S_f + 1 matches E-015 (n ≤ 3000) to 4.8e-25 rel.
7. Honesty notes
- Trudgian's |S(T)| bound is [PROVED] (literature); everything derived from it here is explicit-formula bookkeeping — no unproven input.
- A = 0.9, B₀ = 1.0 are now E-021-MEASURED (15 points, 20–30% margin); the segment bounds of §3 should be re-evaluated with these for the D-037 assembly (I_III ≈ 4.7√n log n used A = 2 — with A = 0.9 the leading constant drops to ~3.5√n log n).
- The contour's existence (gap in [√n, √n+1]) is constructive; choosing T per n is a finite computation for the theorem's range.
- The whole chain is conditional ONLY on Platt's computational RH-to-T₀ (tagged in D-037).
