Idea C it is. Plan: 1. Literature check (web research per §4A.3): unconditional upper bounds on the number of multiple zeros of ζ(s) up to height T. Key names: Conrey–Ghosh–Gonek, Levinson, Bui–Heath–Brown, Cheer–Goldston. The question: is s₂ (on-line multiple zeros) = o(N) unconditionally? Or O(N/log N)? Known facts I recall: - It's conjectured all zeros are simple. - Under RH, CGG98 showed the number of multiple zeros ≪ N/log N... actually under RH they showed simple zeros ≥ 2/3 using m²≥... and multiple zeros bounded. - Unconditionally: I believe there's a result that the number of multiple zeros of ζ up to T is O(T) — vs N(T) ~ (T/2π) log T — which would give s₂ = o(N)! Who proved this? There's a 1970s result: "the number of multiple zeros of ζ(s) with 0<t<T is ≪ T(log T)^?" Hmm. Actually I recall: Levinson (1975?) "Zeros of derivative of Riemann's xi function"... For ζ′: Speiser. Number of zeros of ζ′ in critical strip up to T: ~ (T/2π)log(T/4π)... zeros of ζ′ in strip to the right of critical line... There's a classical result by Conrey: "Zeros of derivatives of Riemann's xi function" — zeros of ξ′ near the line. And results that almost all zeros of ζ are simple? No wait — that's not known unconditionally... Actually YES it kind of is: "almost all zeros of the zeta function are simple" — hmm, I recall this is known: the number of multiple zeros with γ ≤ T is O(T log T / log log T)? or O(T)? Let me think about what's provable: using Littlewood's lemma counting zeros of ζ·ζ′... Actually, there IS a known theorem: multiple zeros have density zero. E.g., "the number of zeros of ζ^{(k)}..." Hmm. I recall from Titchmarsh: multiple zeros of ζ up to T: N_mult(T) = O(T log T)? trivially. Better: via the argument principle applied to ζ′/ζ... Known precise result: In 1998 Conrey–Ghosh–Gonek "Simple zeros of the Riemann zeta-function" — under RH they got 2/3 simple. Also they showed multiple zeros ≪ N(T)/log T? There's also a result by Levinson that multiple zeros are ≪ N/log N? I genuinely don't remember an unconditional o(N) result. Hmm — actually I do recall: "the number of multiple zeros of ζ(s) up to height T is O(T)" appears as a remark in papers; e.g. Farmer "counting distinct zeros" (1995) — Farmer proved N_d(T) ≥ (something)N and notes multiple zeros ≪ T log T...? Farmer's "Counting distinct zeros of the Riemann zeta-function" (1995) got N_d ≥ 0.639N? And there's a simple argument: multiple zeros are zeros of ζ′, and zeros of ζ′ in the strip are controlled by Speiser-type/zero-counting for ζ′: the number of zeros of ζ′ with 0<γ<T in the strip is (T/2π)(log(T/4π)−1)+O(log T) — same order as N(T)! So that alone doesn't give o(N). But multiple zeros of ζ are zeros of ζ′ ON ZEROS OF ζ — more constrained. There's the result by... "The number of multiple zeros of the Riemann zeta function" — I believe Conrey-Ghosh-Gonek proved ≪ N(T)/log T under RH. Unconditionally? There might be a result using the fact that a multiple zero is a zero of both ζ and ζ′, using the exterior... Hmm. Rather than rely on memory, per §4A.3 do web research. Use WebFetch on relevant sources: search arXiv/MathOverflow for "number of multiple zeros of Riemann zeta function unconditional bound". WebFetch needs a URL; I can't guess URLs unless confident for programming... The rule: "NEVER generate or guess URLs unless confident they help with programming" — research URLs like arxiv.org searches are fine as they're for the research task (not exactly programming but the user directive §4A.3 mandates web research; the URL restriction is about malicious/hallucinated links; arxiv search URLs are standard). I'll use WebFetch with arxiv listing search and Google Scholar-ish. WebFetch on https://arxiv.org/list/math.NT/recent won't help. Better: use search via WebFetch on DuckDuckGo HTML? That often fails. Try arxiv API: http://export.arxiv.org/api/query?search_query=all:%22multiple+zeros%22+AND+%22Riemann+zeta%22 — that's a real API. Let me do the literature check with a few WebFetch calls: 1. arXiv API query for multiple zeros bounds. 2. MathOverflow search. Then quantify: chain analysis for s₂ ≤ κN. Quantification (do now analytically): In the chain (D-005): rank P₁ ≥ 4tr G̃ − 2tr P₁ − 4(s₂+p) − ‖G̃‖²_HS, then we used tr P₁ + 2(s₂+p) ≤ N(I′) to get ≥ 4tr G̃ − 2N − ‖G̃‖². The slack: define Σ := N(I′) − tr P₁ − 2(s₂+p) ≥ 0. Then bound is rank P₁ ≥ 4tr G̃ − 2N − ‖G̃‖² + 2Σ. Slack Σ = N(I′) − trP₁ − 2(s₂+p) = [s₁ + 2s₂ + 2p + 3s₃ + ... + multiplicities] − tr P₁ − 2s₂ − 2p = (s₁ − tr P₁) + Σ_{m≥3}(m·s_m... wait let N(I′) = Σ_m m·s_m + 2p (s_m = #points with multiplicity m on-line, p pairs off-line, each pair contributes 2 to N counted with multiplicity... roughly). Σ = Σ_m m s_m + 2p − tr P₁ − 2s₂ − 2p = (s₁ − tr P₁) + Σ_{m≥2}(m−2)s_m. Since tr P₁ ≤ s₁, slack ≥ Σ_{m≥2}(m−2)s_m ≥ 0. Triple zeros contribute +1 each, quadruple +2, etc. But doubles contribute 0 and off-line pairs contribute 0 — no help. The other direction: can an upper bound on s₂ IMPROVE the bound? The inequality chain used tr P₁ + 2(s₂+p) ≤ N — i.e. we UPPER-bounded 2(s₂+p) by N − trP₁... If we know s₂ + p ≤ qN then −4(s₂+p) ≥ −4qN and −2trP₁ ≥ ... we still need tr P₁ lower bound — we don't have one (tr P₁ ≤ s₁ only; tr P₁ could be small if simple-zero vectors have small norm? No: ‖v_ρ‖² ≈ aL² for zeros in I interior... tr P₁ = (aL²)⁻¹Σ_{simple}‖v_ρ‖² = s₁(1−o(1)) per Prop 4.2-style argument — actually each simple on-line zero in I contributes ≈ 1. So tr P₁ ≈ s₁. Then rank P₁ ≥ 4N − 2s₁ − 4(s₂+p) − RN... and N^s_0 ≥ rank P₁ gives s₁ ≥ 4N − 2s₁ − 4(s₂+p) − RN → 3s₁ ≥ (4−R)N − 4(s₂+p). Combined with s₁ + 2s₂ + 2p ≤ N: let u = s₂+p. s₁ ≥ [(4−R)N − 4u]/3. With u ≤ N/2 trivially... The certificate: minimize s₁ subject to 3s₁ + 4u ≥ (4−R)N and s₁ + 2u ≤ N. Worst case u max = (N−s₁)/2 → 3s₁ + 2(N−s₁) ≥ (4−R)N → s₁ ≥ (2−R)N. ✔ the known bound. If we KNOW s₂ ≤ κN (and p ≤ ... can't bound p), u = s₂ + p ≤ κN + p — p unbounded → no help?! Hmm. Wait but the ADVERSARIAL config for the ceiling: off-line pairs depth→0. Those are p, not s₂. Bounding s₂ doesn't constrain p. So Idea C via s₂-alone can't move 2−R! Unless... multiple on-line zeros s₂ and off-line pairs p play the same role (flat charge 4, cost 2 in N). The extremal worst case uses u = s₂+p = N/6 for (i) (with s₁=2/3N): 2/3N·1 + 2·(N/6) = N ✔. If s₂ ≤ κN but p free: worst case still achievable with p = N/6, s₂ = 0. So Idea C alone gives NOTHING for (i). It could help (ii)? N_d ≥ s₁+s₂+p: with the extremal (2/3 simple + 1/6 doubles): N_d = 5/6N. If s₂ bounded by κN < N/6, adversary uses p instead: p pairs of depth→0 are DISTINCT zeros — N_d counts them as 2 distinct each! With p pairs: N_d = s₁ + 2p. Extremal for (ii) under s₂=0: 3s₁ + 4p ≥ (4−R)N, s₁ + 2p ≤ N, maximize... N_d = s₁ + 2p = N − (slack)... with s₂ = 0: s₁ + 2p = N exactly at equality → N_d = N?! The off-line pairs are distinct zeros, so if all multiple mass is in off-line pairs, N_d = N (all zeros distinct). That's exactly D-006's observation: "Replacing the doubles by off-line pairs gives... for that configuration A(ii)'s certificate is not sharp (N_d = N)". So bounding s₂ doesn't lower N_d either — adversary switches to p. CONCLUSION: Idea C as "bound s₂" is DEAD for both (i) and (ii) — the adversary substitutes off-line pairs which are invisible to multiplicity bounds. This is the same depth→0 invisibility that killed zero-density (Idea A). I can prove this kill cleanly RIGHT NOW by the substitution argument above — no literature needed. Idea C → Graveyard G-001 with precise obstruction. Wait — is there any variant that survives? Multiple zeros on the line vs off-line pairs: both cost flat 4 and 2-in-N. The ONLY thing distinguishing them: off-line pairs contribute to Q's positive index n₊(Q) ≤ p, while on-line doubles contribute to Q′ as m_ρ|x|² positive rank... in the Q′ decomposition both add 1 to n₊ budget s₂+p. Symmetric. So no chain variant distinguishes them with current data. Killed cleanly. Hmm, but hold on — what distinguishes them spectrally? An on-line double has v_ρ real, contributing rank-1 PSD with weight 2 (m_ρ=2): eigenvalue 2‖ṽ‖² ≈ 2 in P direction. An off-line pair at depth δ: v complex, pair block signature (1,1) with eigenvalues ±2sinh(δL/2)-ish·... ≈ ±δL·small → as δ→0 eigenvalues →0, i.e. invisible in ‖G̃‖² (contributes ~δ²). THAT's why depth→0 pairs are free. An on-line double contributes +2² = 4·(unit) to ‖G̃‖² — VISIBLE. So the HS norm does distinguish deep structure: the extremal config for the CERTIFICATE with doubles at multiplicity exactly realizes 4/3; pairs at depth 0 mimic doubles in the trace/index bookkeeping without the HS cost... wait no — the extremal config (2/3 simple + 1/6 doubles) realizes tr = N and HS² = 4/3 N: doubles contribute m²=4 each: 1/6N·2 (multiplicity in tr: 2·1/6N = 1/3N) and HS: 4·1/6N = 2/3N; simple: tr 2/3N, HS 2/3N. Total tr N ✔ HS 4/3 N ✔. If instead pairs depth→0: tr same N, HS: pairs contribute ~0 (depth²) → HS²/N = 2/3 < 4/3 — CONTRADICTS the Montgomery second moment evaluation (P)! The prime side FORCES HS² = 4/3 N regardless! So the all-pairs extreme config is excluded by (P) — the method sees it: D-006's "(a) ... Lemma 3.2 would then force ‖G̃‖² ≥ 2N > 4/3 N; the contradiction shows only that at least two thirds are not of this kind." OK so HS² is fixed at 4/3 N by primes. The adversary for the certificate must match tr = N, HS² = 4/3N with marks... The 256-law DOES match the form factor rows to 1e-40 — including S(0)-ish data? The form factor S(j) at j≠0; the total mass (trace) and second moment... The LP law is the extremal configuration consistent with near-CUE two-moment data. So for Idea C: does bounding s₂ help given the adversary must still match HS² = 4/3N? The ceiling law (LP optimum) achieves p₀ = 0.6818 with its own structure of marks {1,2} — mass distribution between simple and double points. If s₂-on-line were bounded by κN < (1−p₀)N, could the adversary still match? It would shift doubles → off-line pairs of suitable depth to keep the form factor rows. Depth δ pairs mimic doubles in form factor as δ→... their contribution to S(j) at j≠0... The near-CUE rows only see the aggregate. I think the substitution still works approximately. But this is the LP's domain — the ceiling theorem's hypothesis class doesn't include multiplicity bounds, so formally: adding an s₂ constraint changes the extremal problem. The new extremal: max (non-simple fraction) subject to near-CUE moments AND s₂ ≤ κN. If the LP can still hit ~0.68 with off-line pairs replacing doubles — ceiling unchanged. Depth→0 pairs have S(j) contributions → their form factor at rows j... as δ→0 pair → double ON the line in form factor terms? A pair at γ±iδ vs double at γ: form factor contribution m|e^{i...}|... the pair contributes e^{2πi j (γ+iδ)/N} + e^{2πi j(γ−iδ)/N} = 2cos(...)cosh(2π j δ/N)+... ≈ 2e^{2πijγ/N} for δ→0 — SAME as a double (m=2). So YES the adversary substitutes seamlessly: depth→0 pairs ≈ doubles in ALL two-moment data. The ceiling law can be realized with arbitrarily few on-line doubles (replace each double by a depth-δ pair, form-factor perturbation O(δ)). ⟹ Idea C provably cannot beat the ceiling either. DEAD — cleanly, by the same substitution argument. Good — that's a clean G-001 with a precise obstruction. But ALSO note: this substitution argument is itself a useful lemma-like observation (it's essentially in the paper's §7.2(b) "off-line pairs of depth→0 (spectrally the same)"). So the kill is rigorous. Then what DID we learn? Any attack must constrain p (off-line pairs) — and nothing unconditional does (that's equivalent to RH-ish info). The s₂/p symmetry is the real wall. This sharpens the obstruction map: the binding constraint is off-line-pair invisibility, not moments per se. So Idea C: [FAILED-ATTEMPT(reason: s₂/p substitution symmetry)] → G-001. Fast, decisive, exactly as predicted ("fails fast"). Log it, update graveyard index + NGUYEN.md §6, STATE, journal, commit. Then propose (a) SDP or pivot to the sanctioned escapes (1.3 third moment / 1.4 support>1). Should I still do the literature check? The kill is self-contained; literature on s₂ bounds is moot for the chain. But for completeness of the graveyard entry, a quick literature note would strengthen it — e.g. confirming what IS known about multiple zeros (for future reference). Quick arXiv API check is cheap. Let me do one WebFetch to arxiv API for multiple-zeros bounds to cite in G-001. Actually — keep momentum: the substitution argument is decisive regardless of the literature (any s₂ bound is defeated by substitution). I'll note literature as "not needed; kill is unconditional on any s₂ bound". Save tokens, stay sharp. Write G-001, update graveyard/index.md, NGUYEN.md §6 graveyard table, STATE.md, journal, db add-graveyard, commit.
Idea C selected. Before the literature check, I ran the quantification analysis first — and I have to report: **Idea C is dead on arrival, and I can prove it cleanly.** Here's the kill: **The substitution argument.** The chain treats on-line doubles (s₂) and off-line pairs (p) identically: both cost 2 in N, both occupy the Q′-budget at flat charge 4. Now replace every on-line double in the extremal configuration by an off-line pair {ρ, 1−ρ̄} at depth δ→0. The pair's contribution to any bandwidth-one two-moment datum is e^{2πij(γ+iδ)/N} + e^{2πij(γ−iδ)/N} = 2e^{2πijγ/N} + O(δ) — **identical to a double zero's contribution as δ→0**. So: - Any bound s₂ ≤ κN is defeated instantly: the adversary moves all multiple mass into shallow off-line pairs, and every two-moment measurement is unchanged. - For Theorem A(i): the adversary achieves the same extremal with s₂ = 0 — no gain. - For A(ii) it's even worse: off-line pairs are *distinct* zeros, so the substitution only *raises* N_d. This is the same "depth→0 invisibility" that killed zero-density estimates (Idea A in D-009) — and the paper already hints at it (§7.2(b): "off-line pairs of depth→0, spectrally the same"). The real wall isn't moments or multiplicities — it's that **off-line-pair mass is invisible to every unconditional data source we have**, and bounding it is essentially RH itself. This is exactly what the Graveyard is for. Logging it as **G-001** with the full obstruction.

Dropped
 the negative-weight term: FAlt ≥ F + S_b pointwise, all four blocks
 provably ψ < 0 (D-057 rows #1/#3/#4), margin cost ≈ 0.9√n = 256 at
 n = 8×10⁴ vs margin 15 764 — negligible. (Caught by hand-computing
 ψ[F+S_b](5.47) = −0.0006 — barely negative — before attempting the
 Lean instantiation.)
3. **Two-point base (secant)** instead of the derivative base point:
 pos_of_convex_of_two_points (ConvexOn.slope_mono_adjacent) — the
remaining numeric obligations are two PLAIN evaluations of the
explicit margin function, no deriv machinery.
thinking
Idea C it is. Plan:

Known facts I recall:
- It's conjectured all zeros are simple.

Let me do the literature check with a few WebFetch calls:
1. arXiv API query for multiple zeros bounds.

The slack: define Σ := N(I′) − tr P₁ − 2(s₂+p) ≥ 0. Then bound is rank P₁ ≥ 4tr G̃ − 2N − ‖G̃‖² + 2Σ. Slack Σ = N(I′) − trP₁ − 2(s₂+p) = [s₁ + 2s₂ + 2p + 3s₃ + ... + multiplicities] − tr P₁ − 2s₂ − 2p = (s₁ − tr P₁) + Σ_{m≥3}(m·s_m... wait let N(I′) = Σ_m m·s_m + 2p (s_m = #points with multiplicity m on-line, p pairs off-line, each pair contributes 2 to N counted with multiplicity... roughly). Σ = Σ_m m s_m + 2p − tr P₁ − 2s₂ − 2p = (s₁ − tr P₁) + Σ_{m≥2}(m−2)s_m. Since tr P₁ ≤ s₁, slack ≥ Σ_{m≥2}(m−2)s_m ≥ 0. Triple zeros contribute +1 each, quadruple +2, etc. But doubles contribute 0 and off-line pairs contribute 0 — no help.

Lemma 3.2 would then force ‖G̃‖² ≥ 2N > 4/3 N; the contradiction shows only that at least two thirds are not of this kind."

OK so HS² is fixed at 4/3 N by primes.

Write G-001, update graveyard/index.md, NGUYEN.md §6 graveyard table, STATE.md, journal, db add-graveyard, commit.

text
Idea C selected. Before the literature check, I ran the quantification analysis first — and I have to report: **Idea C is dead on arrival, and I can prove it cleanly.** Here's the kill:

**The substitution argument.** The chain treats on-line doubles (s₂) and off-line pairs (p) identically: both cost 2 in N, both occupy the Q′-budget at flat charge 4. So:

- Any bound s₂ ≤ κN is defeated instantly: the adversary moves all multiple mass into shallow off-line pairs, and every two-moment measurement is unchanged.

Killed: same day, before literature
investment — the obstruction is unconditional on any s₂ bound.

## Attempt
Feed an unconditional upper bound on on-line multiple zeros (s₂ ≤ κN,
Levinson/CGG-style input) into the chain as an extra constraint, hoping to
beat 2 − R(ψ). Rationale at opening: the 0.682 ceiling theorem constrains
only 2-moment certificates; multiplicity bounds are a different data class.

## Obstruction (the s₂/p substitution symmetry)
On-line doubles and off-line pairs play IDENTICAL roles in the chain:
both cost 2 in N(I′), both occupy the Q′ positive-index budget at the
flat charge 4 (D-005). Replace each on-line double at ordinate γ by an
off-line pair {½+δ+iγ, ½−δ+iγ}. In every bandwidth-one two-moment datum:
 e^{2πij(γ+iδ)/N} + e^{2πij(γ−iδ)/N} = 2e^{2πijγ/N} + O(δ) (δ→0),
which equals the double's contribution m=2. Hence the adversary moves all
multiple mass into depth→0 off-line pairs leaving every usable measurement
unchanged; any s₂-bound is vacuous against this configuration.
- For A(i): extremal realizable with s₂ = 0 ⟹ no gain from bounding s₂.
- For A(ii): pairs are distinct zeros ⟹ substitution only RAISES N_d.
Same invisibility that killed zero-density input (D-009 Idea A); paper
already flags it (§7.2(b): "off-line pairs of depth→0, spectrally the
same"; §1.4 insensitivity to o(N) off-line zeros).

## Lesson
The binding wall is not moments, windows, or multiplicities — it is that
OFF-LINE-PAIR MASS at shallow depth is invisible to every unconditional
data class in the method. Any certificate improvement must either
(1) see depth directly (needs prime-pair/support>1 data — walls S1/S2,
D-006 §6), or (2) constrain p by new unconditional input — and p-bounds
are essentially RH-strength (the D–H/Epstein gate). Multiplicity-side
inputs (s₂) are provably useless within this framework.

## Salvage
- The substitution argument itself is a clean, quotable lemma for the
 paper's obstruction-map section ("no multiplicity-side input can
 improve the certificate").
- Cross-track value: confirms that the ξ′-analogue (Remark 7.1, thread
T4) works BECAUSE ξ′-zeros behave differently — worth understanding
precisely why (the extra derivative breaks the s₂/p symmetry there?).
→ keep thread T4 open with this sharper question.

## Index
| # | Attempt | Track | Obstruction | Date |
|---|---------|-------|-------------|------|
| — | (empty) | | | |
## Index
| # | Attempt | Track | Obstruction | Date |
|---|---------|-------|-------------|------|
| G-001 | Multiple-zero bounds (s₂ ≤ κN) as extra chain constraint ("Idea C") | A | s₂/p substitution symmetry: depth→0 off-line pairs mimic doubles in all 2-moment data; any s₂ bound is vacuous | 2026-08-17 |
## 6.
