STILL failing — the `show` didn't change the displayed goal (`ρ ∈ zeroGlobalWindowNeg T ↔ ∃ a ∈ ⋯.toFinset, ...`) — and the rw [Finset.mem_image] succeeded (RHS is the ∃ form) but mem_toFinset STILL fails. The `show` was accepted (no error on it) but the goal displays the SAME — meaning the show didn't change anything visible: the goal was ALREADY `ρ ∈ zeroGlobalWindowNeg T ↔ ...` — so ext ρ gave directly the SET membership on the left (not the coe-of-toFinset). How? Because `ext ρ` on `↑s₁ = ↑s₂` where the Finset equality coerces — Finset.ext_iff : s₁ = s₂ ↔ ∀ a, a ∈ s₁ ↔ a ∈ s₂ — `ext ρ` uses that: the goal ∀ ρ, ρ ∈ s₁ ↔ ρ ∈ s₂ — with s₁ = (zeroGlobalWindowNeg_finite T).toFinset: ρ ∈ toFinset — which Set.Finite.mem_toFinset says ↔ ρ ∈ zeroGlobalWindowNeg T — the DISPLAY shows the SET form — so Lean is displaying `ρ ∈ (zeroGlobalWindowNeg_finite T).toFinset` as `ρ ∈ zeroGlobalWindowNeg T`?? — there's no such sugar... UNLESS ext unfolded the toFinset: `Set.Finite.toFinset hs : Finset α := ⟨hs.toFinset, ...⟩`? — its actual def: `protected def Finite.toFinset {s : Set α} (hs : s.Finite) : Finset α := ...` — membership: `a ∈ hs.toFinset ↔ a ∈ s` — Set.Finite.mem_toFinset. The DISPLAY of `ρ ∈ hs.toFinset` — there's `Set.Finite.mem_toFinset` as the iff — but is there COE sugar? `hs.toFinset` has instance `SetLike` with coe = s itself?? If `hs.toFinset`'s SetLike-coe IS s (by def), then `ρ ∈ hs.toFinset` (SetLike membership) DISPLAYS as `ρ ∈ s`?! — SetLike.mem : a ∈ s — the display would be ρ ∈ zeroGlobalWindowNeg T ✓ THAT's it: the ext-goal uses the SetLike membership (coe), which displays as the set. And mem_toFinset's pattern `?m ∈ hs.toFinset` — the Finset-membership — is a DIFFERENT term (Finset.mem vs SetLike.mem) — so rw fails.
The fix: `show ρ ∈ (zeroGlobalWindowNeg_finite T).toFinset ↔ ...` — to convert the SetLike-membership display to the Finset-membership — my show WAS accepted (defeq ✓) but the rw STILL failed with the same display... The error display after the show: `ρ ∈ zeroGlobalWindowNeg T ↔ ∃ a ∈ ⋯.toFinset, ...` — the LEFT still displays the set form — hmm — but the show's LHS was `ρ ∈ (zeroGlobalWindowNeg_finite T).toFinset` — which DISPLAYS as `ρ ∈ zeroGlobalWindowNeg T` anyway (same sugar!). So the term is now the Finset-membership ✓ but displays the same. Then why does mem_toFinset fail?! Its LHS pattern: `?m ∈ (zeroGlobalWindowNeg_finite T).toFinset` — the goal LHS is EXACTLY that (after show)... "Did not find an occurrence of the pattern ?m.390 ∈ ⋯.toFinset" — the pattern in the ERROR is `?m.390 ∈ ⋯.toFinset` — with `⋯.toFinset` elided — rw's failure display elides the actual toFinset. Hmm — maybe the issue: after `show`, the goal's LHS is the Finset membership ✓ but `rw [(zeroGlobalWindowNeg_finite T).mem_toFinset]` — mem_toFinset : x ∈ hs.toFinset ↔ x ∈ s — its LHS is `x ∈ hs.toFinset` — matching `ρ ∈ (zeroGlobalWindowNeg_finite T).toFinset` ✓ should fire...
UNLESS the rw [Finset.mem_image] that ran FIRST changed the goal form: rw [Finset.mem_image] rewrites the RHS `ρ ∈ P.image conj` → `∃ a ∈ P, conj a = ρ` ✓ (worked — display shows ∃). THEN mem_toFinset on the LHS `ρ ∈ (zeroGlobalWindowNeg_finite T).toFinset` — should still be there... The error display shows `ρ ∈ zeroGlobalWindowNeg T` — hmm — that's the SET — so after mem_image, the LHS is displayed as set-membership — implying the LHS TERM is the SetLike/set membership, not the Finset membership. So the `show` did NOT convert it — because `ρ ∈ (zeroGlobalWindowNeg_finite T).toFinset` (my show's LHS) is DEFEQ to `ρ ∈ zeroGlobalWindowNeg T` (the set) — and the elaborator kept... no — show replaces the goal with the stated form — the stated LHS is the Finset-membership term — after show the goal IS `ρ ∈ (zeroGlobalWindowNeg_finite T).toFinset ↔ ...` — but the display shows `ρ ∈ zeroGlobalWindowNeg T`...
OK — maybe Set.Finite.toFinset's membership is DEFINED as set membership (the def: `protected def Set.Finite.toFinset (hs : s.Finite) : Finset α := ⟨∅, fun a => a ∈ s, ...⟩`?? no — Finite.toFinset = Multiset.toFinset of the underlying... whatever). Let me try a different approach: skip the mem_toFinset rewrite on the LHS entirely — treat the LHS set-membership directly:
After ext ρ (with the show), the goal is `ρ ∈ zeroGlobalWindowNeg T-as-a-Set ↔ ∃ a ∈ P, conj a = ρ` — wait — is the LHS the Finset membership or the Set membership? If Set.Finite.toFinset's SetLike instance coe is literally the set s (def Set.Finite.toFinset hs := ⟨...⟩ with coe = s), then `ρ ∈ hs.toFinset` (SetLike mem) IS `ρ ∈ s` DEFINITIONALLY — same term! Then mem_toFinset's LHS `?m ∈ hs.toFinset` — if hs.toFinset's mem IS s's mem, the pattern `?m ∈ hs.toFinset` — elaborates `∈` as Finset.mem vs SetLike... `Set.Finite.toFinset` returns a `Finset α` — `a ∈ hs.toFinset` is `Finset.Mem a hs.toFinset` — and Finset.Mem for that particular finset might be DEFEQ to a ∈ s (if the Finset is built as ⟨s, nodup-proof⟩). The iff `Set.Finite.mem_toFinset : a ∈ hs.toFinset ↔ a ∈ s` — an IFF (not rfl) — so the terms differ (Finsets' mem is Multiset/Quot-based). The rw should still match `?m ∈ hs.toFinset`...
I'm going in circles on elaboration minutiae. PRAGMATIC: drop `set P/N` AND the ext/show dance — prove hNeq via Set.Finite-level manipulation: state hNeq as an iff of memberships and use `Set.Finite.mem_toFinset` as the bridge — or simplest: `simp only [(zeroGlobalWindowNeg_finite T).mem_toFinset, (zeroGlobalWindow_finite T).mem_toFinset, Finset.mem_image]` as a SINGLE simp-call instead of rw — simp is more robust about matching:
```lean
rw [hN, hP]
ext ρ
simp only [(zeroGlobalWindowNeg_finite T).mem_toFinset,
(zeroGlobalWindow_finite T).mem_toFinset, Finset.mem_image]
```
simp only [mem_toFinset] rewrites `?x ∈ ?hs.toFinset` wherever it appears — should hit both. Try that.
Trying the simp-only form for the membership rewrites.
