FASCINATING. Partial sums agree until j=100 (4.37584774e+10 vs 4.375855409e+10 — differ at 7.7e4 relative 1.8e-6), then between j=100 and j=150, e011 collapses to −2.14 while diag collapses to 76682. The partial sums reach 3.15e23 at j=50 — the cancellation brings 3e23 down to O(1)! The difference between the two final answers: 76682. So the two η sequences differ in a way that only shows in terms j > 100 — but we measured all diffs ≤ 4.8e-4 (j=0,1) and ≤ 1e-19 elsewhere...
Term j: C(200,j)·η_{j−1}. If η_{j−1} differs by δ_j, sum difference = Σ C(200,j)δ_j. Observed difference: 76682 − (−2.14) ≈ 76685. With δ_j ≤ 1e-19 for j ≥ 2: Σ C(200,j)·1e-19 ~ 2^200·1e-19 = 10^{60−19} = 10^{41}?? That bound is loose. But the measured max diffs: j=1: 4.8e-4, j=0: 2.4e-4, j=2,3: ~7e-12, j≥4: ≤7.4e-20. Contribution: C(200,2)·4.8e-4 = 19900·4.8e-4 = 9.6; C(200,1)·2.4e-4 = 0.048; C(200,3)·8.45e-12 = 1.3e6·8.45e-12 = 1.1e-5. Total ~9.65. NOT 76685.
But WAIT — the diff measurement: `diffs` computed abs(eta_e[j]−eta_d[j]) at mp.mp.dps = 100 (after the loop set dps=100). If the true difference at some j is ~1e-100·(huge)... no, abs diff is abs diff.
Hmm, unless the difference is exactly HIDDEN: what if eta_d[j] for some j has a huge error but eta_e[j] has the SAME huge value... no — the diff would show it.
Hold on, look at partials at j=100: differ by 7.7e4 out of 4.4e10 (rel 1.8e-6). The terms at j~100: C(200,100)·η_99 ~ 9e58·2e-48 = 1.8e11. A RELATIVE η error of 4e-16 at j=100 would produce 7.7e4. But we measured abs diff at j=99: 1.19e-102!!! Wait — we measured |η_e[99] − η_d[99]| = 1.19e-102. C(200,100)·1.19e-102 = 9e58·1.19e-102 ~ 1e-43. But partials differ by 7.7e4 at j=100?!?! IMPOSSIBLE — unless the diff measurement is wrong!
OH NO. I see it. The `diffs` computation ran AFTER `mp.mp.dps = 100` was set in the eta_d loop. abs(eta_e[j] − eta_d[j]): eta_e values computed/stored at dps 150, eta_d at 1700/100. The subtraction at dps 100... if the true difference is smaller than 10^{−100} relative to... no, absolute subtraction: η_99 ~ 2e-48; subtracting two values at dps 100 (100 DECIMAL digits): representable differences down to 10^{−148}. Fine.
Hmm, so how can partials at j=100 differ by 7.7e4 when all |δ_j| ≤ 4.8e-4?? Σ_{j≤100} C(200,j)δ_j: dominated by C(200,2)·δ_1 = 9.6... The partial at j=100 differs 7.7e4 > 9.6!!! CONTRADICTION. Unless δ_j for some j ≤ 100 is much bigger than measured. The measured top diffs only went j=0..16. For j ≥ 17: diffs ≤ 7.4e-20 (that's what the sorted top-10 shows — j=16: 3.12e-20 is the 9th largest). So ALL j ≥ 4 have δ ≤ 7.4e-20?? Then Σ_{j=4}^{100} C(200,j)·7.4e-20 ~ 2^200·7.4e-20 ~ 10^{41}. LOOSE bound. The actual could be small. But 7.7e4 actual difference requires Σ C δ ~ 7.7e4 with δ ≤ 7.4e-20 for j ≥ 4: need Σ_{j≥4} C(200,j)|δ_j| ≥ 7.7e4: dominated by C(200,100)·δ_99 ~ 9e58·δ_99 → δ_99 ≥ 8.5e-55. But measured δ_99 = 1.19e-102?!?! CONTRADICTION AGAIN.
So the diff measurement MUST be lying. How? `diffs=[(abs(eta_e[j]-eta_d[j]),j) ...]` — computed at mp.mp.dps=100. eta_d[j] is an mpc/mpf with full precision content; eta_e mpf. Hmm... UNLESS eta_d[j] values are mpf with LIMITED precision semantics — no such thing in mpmath; mpf holds exact binary float, operations round at current dps.
OH WAIT!!!! I think I've got it. eta_d[j] = tau + sig + (−1)^j computed at dps 100, where tau (dps 1700) ≈ (−1)^{j+1}·(1+ε) with ε ~ 3^{−j}·... At dps 100, the ADDITION tau + (−1)^j: result ~ ε ~ 3^{−j}: for j ≥ 210, ε < 10^{−100} → rounds to... no, for j ≤ 200, ε ~ 3^{−200} ~ 10^{−96}: at dps 100, tau + (−1)^j retains ~4 significant digits of ε. So eta_d[199] has only ~4 correct digits!! And the diff measurement: |eta_e[199] − eta_d[199]| ~ 10^{−96}·(relative 1e-4) ~ 1e-100 ✓ matches measured 4.36e-102!! So the measured diffs are consistent: eta_d[j] accurate to ABSOLUTE ~1e-100 (dps-100 addition floor), eta_e[j] accurate to ~1e-102+ (dps 150, values ~1e-96 → ~46 significant digits).
Absolute η error ≤ ~1e-100 everywhere (both). Sum error ≤ Σ C(200,j)·1e-100 ≤ 2^200·1e-100 ~ 10^{−40}. STILL can't explain 7.7e4 partial difference!!!
Unless the C(n,j) recurrence is the problem! c = c*(n−j+1)/j at dps 300: 200 multiplications, error ~200·10^{−300} relative — negligible. Same for both sums anyway — SAME c.
THE PARTIALS DIFFER AT j=100 BY 7.7e4. With identical c and η agreeing to 1e-100 absolute, partial sums can differ by at most Σ_{j≤100} C(200,j)·1e-100 ~ 10^{60−100} = 10^{−40}. OBSERVED 7.7e4. This is a LOGICAL IMPOSSIBILITY. Therefore one of my premises about the values is wrong. The printed diffs must be wrong. How?
AH. Maybe: eta_e and eta_d lists have DIFFERENT LENGTHS or INDEX OFFSETS! eta_e = [E[k+1] for k in range(KMAX+1)]: eta_e[j] = E[j+1] = η_j ✓. eta_d: appended in loop j=0..KMAX: eta_d[j] = η_j ✓. Lengths both 211 ✓.
Hmm, what about `sf(eta)` closure: partials appended +s — for diag, s is mpc; fine.
Let me directly print, for j = 95..105: C(200,j), eta_e[j-1], eta_d[j-1], term_e, term_d, termdiff. The partial difference must come from somewhere!
The partial sums diverge between j=100 and j=150 despite η agreeing to 1e-100 — logically impossible with identical binomial coefficients. Let me dump the actual terms around there.
